Champions Breaking Barriers
Our university's School of Physical Education and Sports (BESYO) organized a panel titled 'Champions Breaking the Barriers' on the occasion of 'December 3, World Day of Persons with Disabilities'.
The opening speech of the panel held at the Kutlubey Campus Conference Hall of our university was made by Prof. Dr. Mehmet Güçlü, Director of the School of Physical Education and Sports (BESYO).
Güçlü said, “Each of us has different duties to remove the obstacles in hearts and minds. We should strive in this direction and act with the idea that everyone is a candidate for disability. I believe that when we do this, it will be a more livable world for everyone.”
After the opening speech, the panel titled 'Champions Breaking the Barriers' was chaired by Assoc. Prof. Taner Bozkuş, Head of the Department of Sports Management at BESYO.
Bozkuş said that with the event, they aimed to change the perspective on life and disabled people and to open new horizons in the minds of the participants.
“It is easy for us to achieve the difficult”
Speaking first at the panel, Nergis Altıntaş, a physically disabled table tennis national athlete, gave examples from her life and expressed the success she achieved with her perseverance along with the difficulties she experienced.
Altıntaş said, “I became disabled at the age of 16. After that, they encouraged me to do sports. Yes, it is very difficult, but it is easy for us to achieve what is difficult. Right now, there is no one who can beat me. I hope the students I trained will beat me. I hope I will fly the flag of our country in the 2020 Olympics.”
“My achievements have made me the most successful athlete in the world”
Nesim Turan, another successful national athlete of physically disabled table tennis, shared his achievements and said, “I realized at the age of 13-14 that I was an individual and that I could not have any disability. My achievements carried me to the most successful athlete award in the world. We realized our dreams by working hard. For the first time after China, Turks played the final.”
“I am very proud that I achieved something despite everything”
Hakan Akkaya, the pioneer of wheelchair fencing in Turkey, told the story of how he started fencing: “I started fencing at the age of 18. This branch was not active. I started this sport with a project. When I had a disorganized and disorganized life, I started fencing again and held on to life. I received my first official medal 8 months after the federation was established. I became the world champion in 2017. Then my degrees kept coming. I am very proud that I have achieved something despite everything.”
Hüseyin Fahri Fırıncıoğlu, Deputy Mayor of Bartın, academicians, provincial directors and students attended the event, which ended after the questions and answers were taken.
Champions visited Rector Uzun.
The speakers of the panel, champion national athletes Akkaya, Altıntaş and Turan, also visited Bartın University Rector Prof. Dr. Orhan Uzun.
During the visit, which was attended by the Director of our University's School of Physical Education and Sports (BESYO) Güçlü and the Head of the Department of Sports Management Bozkuş, the successful athletes, who were shown as examples with their life stories, thanked Rector Uzun for his close interest and sensitivity.
Rector Uzun congratulated the athletes for their success in national and international competitions and said, “As a requirement of our faith and deep-rooted tradition, we must always stand by disabled individuals and make efforts to make their lives easier. In this direction, each of us has individual duties. With these thoughts, I congratulate our young talents for their achievements and exemplary personalities despite everything and wish them continued success.”
“We are creating an exemplary science center suitable for the needs of all our students”
Underlining that they strive to create an exemplary science home suitable for every need of all students, especially disabled students, on the campuses of Bartın University, Rector Uzun said, “With the encouragement and encouragement of our Higher Education Council President Prof. Dr. M. A. Yekta Saraç, studies were carried out in our higher education institutions with the slogans of ‘Access Without Barriers’ and ‘Education Without Barriers’. In this direction, our faculties of Science, Engineering, Literature, Education and Islamic Sciences in Kutlubey Campus have been designed in a way that will not cause difficulties for our disabled students with their physical structures and a nomination application was made to YÖK in the category of 'Accessibility in Space'. With the improvements to be made, I am sure that our university will stand out as a disabled-friendly university. I would like to express my gratitude to the President of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) and the members of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) who have always encouraged and supported us with the understanding of 'New YÖK', which puts the continuous improvement approach at its center.”
